At North By Northeast Interactive in 2011 James presented “Points don’t make it a game!” wherein he challenged the assumptions of gamification, which was riding high on the hype cycle at the time. A year later and the space has matured considerably but the pitfalls remain, trying to apply game design like a coat of paint is just going to leave you with a peeling mess. James will examine how game mechanics modify player behaviour and why they have to be built into the foundations of an experience to succeed.
